For this service project, i hope to be placed with a family from a culture that i have yet to be exposed to, that way i can get a glimpse of life in an area of the world that i normally wouldnt have. In this way i can get an idea of how life is in other parts of the world.
I dont normally like to make assumptions, because they can be grossly wrong, and give me an improper idea of what to expect, this being said, i know that these families are Refugees from around the world, and that i will be at their house, attempting to help them adjust to how life is in the US. the only real assumption i can make that would be mostly accurate is that there is a good chance I will be placed with a family that has either never or very limited experience with American culture.
As far as being able to make a connection with the family, i think that Music is a universal interest, even though music may differe around the world, there is music everywhere, so that could be a point of interest that could help me with making a connection. i will have a better idea though once i have met the family though. Another point of interest could be food, while i was in Afghanistan it was common to alternate cooking meals for some of the local population, trying their food and them trying some of our food, even though our communication was very limited it was easy to make a connection over a good meal.
